A question about WASP....

I was reading a profile about 80s glam metal and it mentioned Wasp alongside the likes of Poison and Pretty Boy Floyd. I liked WASP very much, but never really considred them to be a 'glam' band. Would you call them a glam band?

Blackie and W.A.S.P i guess have roots in Glam, Circus Circus, (Wasnt he in the Dolls for a bit? or is that a myth..?) Sister Sister, etc etc. Dunno about now tho cos he just seams like a fat miserable Wanker now, and a real Diva to boot, im told by a German Music Promoter who booked em ( an never again by sounds of it..) .. Was good in there day i guess, well i liked 'em anywhoooooo !

Early WASP I would say looked similar to Crue in their Shout era. Musically a bit more metal but I'd still tag them as glam, more glam metal than glam rock.

As there are no rules and criteria and many shades of the glam rainbow, I'd say they were a shade or Red as opposed to the glam of bands like Tryx and Poison who were Violet.

Why don't you post a glam rainbow and see where bands fall into it. Problem is there are probably categories of glam like sleaze and bubblegum but might be fun.

The 3 first albums are defintily glam metal in the same sense as early Ratt and early Motley Crue. A bit harder, but still in the same bag.

And they came out of the same scene, so I guess almost everything was labeled glam at that time.

Poison was considered pop metal back in the day and they never really broke until MTV picked up on them and made them glam superstars.

The Headless Children was a heavy metal album and since then they have shifted between the two chategories.

Where do bands like Slaughter and Winger fall into the scene?

Hmmmm...... In my oppinion those bands are the true Hairmetal bands, although in the 80's bands like that were commonly reffered to as "AOR"..... even if AOR is an older expression for a slightly different type of music.

Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Bonfire, Warrant and a lot of other bands also fall into that same chategory...

This is a late 80's phenomenen. I might make a lot of enemies here now, but you don't all have to agree...... I'll split it down anyway.

80 - 84 = Mostly glam metal. The LA Scene was very rough and bands like WASP, MOTLEY CRUE, RATT and a lot of others where the kings. The music was metal the outfits were studded leather and the songs were agressive and often "evil".

85 - 86/87 = MTV enters the metal scene in a bigger way enabling bands like Poison (who had been ridiculed in LA in the beginning) to become huge stars. A lot of the other bands see what a huge effect MTV has on record sales and push to be more commercial. Motley release Theatre of Pain (before Poison released their debut though) which is more commerical both in look and music. Wasp do the same with both the Last Command and especially Inside The Electric Circus and a lot of other bands follow

87 - 89 = The outrageous glam look of the bands' ereas mentioned in the post above is wearing off. People are getting a bit bored with every band looking the same and doing the same interviews. Motley Crue decide to strip off their image and go for a street style (also known to be the sleaze rock style) with their Girls Girls Girls album. You have groups like LA Guns making a name for themselves. Guns & Roses and such..... these are the bands that used to be full on glam who still have an attitude about their stuff just without the over-the-top image.

Then you also had the soft metal/hairmetal/pop metal/AOR bands where I would stick Winger and slaughter and a lot of those other bands. Perm hair, blue jeans, nice T-shirts and just properly dressed up by a designer to look like they didn't put any effort into their look at all. Guitars turned waaaaayyyyyy down and synth turned way up. With shout choruses that would make the non-rockers scream and the rockers vomit. A lot of you probably like this kinda music, but for me this was the wave that made me think "That's about goddamned time" when grunge came and killed it all

To quote Smokey Robinson, I second that emotion! I don't think it matters whether a band is glam or not... it's whether they were any good or not. The Glam scene went from being a few great little bands to a lot of watered down crap. Simple as.

And to quote Smokey Robinson, I second that emotion! The glam scene went from being a few awesome little bands to be diluted with too much crap! Who cares if someone is glam, it's whether they were any good, surely?
